4 Must-Do HVAC Maintenance Tasks in the New Year

4 Must-Do HVAC Maintenance Tasks in the New YearAs the New Year approaches, you may be thinking about what sort of resolutions you will be making to improve your life and well being.

While many resolutions focus on the challenges of exercising more and eating less, you may find other resolutions that will be easier to keep — such as those that pertain to improving efficiency in your home, for instance. Among the easiest tasks you can perform have to do with HVAC maintenance.

Following are four of what we consider HVAC must-dos for 2018.

1. Schedule winter maintenance.

Did you skip your fall furnace maintenance? Well, winters are long here in Hauppauge, so there’s still time to schedule it. Annual furnace maintenance helps discover potential problems before they turn into expensive fixes. Among the tasks your HVAC pro will perform: check heat exchanger and burners, controls, thermostat, condensate drain, air handler and electrical connections, and should also check for gas leaks in the system.

2. Change air filters.

Changing the air filter regularly is the best thing you can do to ensure good performance out of your HVAC system. Keeping a clean filter in the system helps promote good air flow, so that your system runs cooler — thus causing less friction and heat, which will wear out parts quicker, and which also makes the system run less efficiently. It also keeps boosts your air quality, particularly if you use a good quality air filter that traps more pollutants.

3. Check insulation levels.

Having sufficient insulation can help your home stay warmer, so that your heating system works more efficiently. One key site to check is the attic, where insulation should cover the ceiling floor to at least the top of or above the joists. Also, wrapping ductwork in unconditioned spaces, such as the attic, can help the system run more efficiently.

4. Check vents.

Clean HVAC vents, vacuuming ducts and making sure dampers are open to improve air flow.
