Keeping your home’s air clean and breathable can be difficult. The HVAC system’s filter can eliminate things like mold spores and pet dander, but it’s ineffective against smaller particles – which are also the most harmful.
Especially if you’re an allergy sufferer, you may need extra protection in the form of a HEPA filter, which can eliminate things like bacteria, viruses, cigarette smoke, and more. Unfortunately, these special, ultra-thick filters will damage your HVAC system by restricting airflow. If you want to use the best air filters, you need a dedicated air purifier.
A term you’ll see used often in air purifiers is “True HEPA.” A High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter is capable of removing 99.97 percent of contaminants from the air, down to 0.3 microns. This includes smoke, insecticides, face powders, etc.
However, there are also “HEPA-like” filters that eliminate 99 percent of contaminants, but only down to 2 microns – things like milled flour and auto exhaust. This means they miss a lot of harmful particles in your air. If you want the best air filters, here are some air purifiers that specifically use True HEPA:
- Honeywell. Honeywell makes a number of great air purifiers. The AirGenius5 is good for medium-sized rooms, and has different levels to eliminate germs, allergens, and more. The Honeywell 50250 can be used on larger rooms and has a special indicator to remind you to change the filter.
- GermGuardian 3-in-1. This purifier provides three different types of protection. In addition to air filtration, it has odor reduction, plus UV-rays to kill mold and bacteria.
- Winix PlasmaWave 5300. This unit actually breaks down harmful contaminants, without producing dangerous byproducts. It’s also certified by Energy Star to save money and energy while providing optimum performance.
- IQAir HealthPro. While the other purifiers are mostly designed for single rooms, this one will actually cover the area of a small house. It runs quietly and boasts a longer filter life, while still providing exceptionally clean air.
