Finding a good HVAC contractor can be daunting. Whether you’re looking for a new installation or just repairing the existing system, you could be shelling out some serious bucks and you want to know that whoever you hire will do a good job. Fortunately, there are ways to tell if the contractors you are considering are likely to do a good job.
Following are some of the best questions to ask before you hire a contractor.
How long have you been in business?
While you shouldn’t base your decision solely on how long a company has been operating, any business that’s been operating for several years has likely been doing something right. Plus, they are bound to have accumulated some kind of reputation along the way.
Ask for referrals.
Ask friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors for referrals.
Ask the company for references.
Once you have references, call them and ask about their experiences with the company. Did they do the job on time and at the estimated cost? Were there any surprises? Would they use this company again?
Do your research. Look the companies up on the Internet. But remember, glowing reports may be a company’s efforts at self-promotion, while negative reviews may be the work of someone with an ax to grind. So do be judicious as you assess online reviews. Ask the company about the negative reviews in particular.
Does the company deal in energy-efficient products, particularly Energy Star-rated products?
Your goal whenever replacing HVAC equipment should be to improve efficiency. Make sure whoever you hire is dedicated to using the most efficient practices and installing the most efficient products you can afford.
Request a home evaluation.
You probably don’t want to hire any contractor who gives you a rough estimate for an installation over the phone. Accepting an installation that hasn’t been preceded by a home evaluation is a recipe for getting the wrong size — and thus, less efficient — equipment.
