How Do You Select an HVAC Contractor? Let These Questions Guide You

When hiring an HVAC contractor for your Long Island home, there are a few questions you should ask to ensure the best experience possible:

1) What licensing, insurance, and qualifications does the contractor have? An HVAC contractor should be licensed in your state and should have insurance. Membership with contractors’ associations is also a good sign. Be sure to ask about the How Do You Select an HVAC Contractor? Let These Questions Guide Youcertifications and qualifications of anyone working on your home – not just the owner of the business. Technicians, for example, should be NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certified. Always ask to see written proof of certification and insurance.

2) What staff and resources does the contractor have? A contractor should have enough staff that the project will be completed in a reasonable amount of time and the contractor will be able to respond quickly to problems or service calls.

3) What warranties, follow-up services and guarantees are offered? What is covered in the warranties or guarantees? What will happen if the work is not up to code or you have a problem? How much will maintenance and service for your HVAC system cost? Be sure to compare long-term HVAC costs when comparing contractors.

4) What are the estimates like? Compare at least three estimates. Sometimes, it makes sense to pay a little more for a contractor with a better track record or a better warranty.

5) Is the contractor willing to inspect your home and give you specific recommendations or options? Be wary of contractors who offer cookie-cutter solutions for your home or try to pressure you into an HVAC system without explaining different efficiencies such as SEERs and HSPFs or other options.

6) Does the HVAC contractor have brands you are interested in? A contractor who can offer different brands can offer more options.
