Your Home Safety To-Do List

Your Home Safety To-Do ListYour Long Island home should be a safe haven away from the cares of the world. You can increase your safety and peace of mind by adding security against break-ins, fires and other hazards. Here are some steps to take to increase home safety.

Lighting for Security

Good security lighting begins on the landscape. Install motion-detecting lights on the garage and near all entryways. Make sure that these lights cast a wide enough beam that no hiding places are left in shadow. You can supplement motion-detecting lights with solar-powered lighting placed around the yard.

Indoors, leave a kitchen light or sitting room light on at night and put other lights on timers. This makes it appear as if someone might be at home and awake even if you are asleep or away for the evening. Intruders usually prefer easy targets. The more you do to make your home look occupied, the better.

Secure Your Windows and Doors

Extra locks are important, but beyond those, look to storm doors and windows for home safety. These add an extra layer of protection between you and intruders who have to work harder to enter your home. As a bonus, using security storm doors and windows will also increase the energy efficiency of your home by preventing drafts.

Electrical Safety

Replace frayed or damaged cords and make sure they don’t pose a tripping hazard. Keep all electrical appliances well maintained and have a licensed electrician inspect and perform any electrical repairs in the home.

HVAC Safety

Prevent accidents and emergencies caused by your HVAC system by taking the following steps.

  • Keep the area around the furnace clean.
  • Change the filter when it is dirty. Dirty filters impact airflow and this can lead to furnace overheating and other problems.
  • Teach children not to play around the furnace or air conditioning unit.
  • Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms on all levels of the home.
